The complete move-out cleaning checklist.

What Virginia landlords actually check at walkthrough — room by room — and the spots that quietly cost renters their deposits.

In Virginia, your landlord has 45 days to return your security deposit — minus deductions for damage and cleaning beyond normal wear. The cleaning line is where most disputes happen, and it's the one you can fully control. Here's the checklist we use on professional move-out cleans across the Lynchburg area.

Kitchen — where deposits go to die

  • Inside the oven (the #1 walkthrough failure), under burners, and the stove hood
  • Inside the refrigerator and freezer — emptied, wiped, deodorized
  • Inside every cabinet and drawer, plus cabinet fronts
  • Sink descaled and polished; countertops and backsplash scrubbed

Bathrooms

  • Tile and grout scrubbed, soap scum removed from shower doors
  • Toilet cleaned and disinfected — including the base and behind
  • Mirrors, light bars, faucets polished; drawers and vanity wiped inside

Every room

  • Baseboards, door frames and window sills hand-wiped
  • Windowsills and tracks; blinds dusted
  • Walls spot-cleaned — scuffs, fingerprints, around switches
  • Closets and shelving wiped; floors vacuumed and mopped last

DIY or hire it out?

Budget 6–10 hours for a thorough DIY on a 2–3 bedroom rental — plus supplies you may not own (degreaser, grout brush, a real vacuum). A professional move-out clean in the Lynchburg area typically runs $250–$450, is landlord-checklist ready, and comes with our 24-hour re-clean guarantee — if the walkthrough flags anything, we come back free.
